Yearning For Naivety

from Duchess Edge by Chris Bicknell

/

about

Yearning For Naivety is the fifth track on Duchess Edge and is one of the newer songs on the album. It's also a unique track in the way it was written. The inspiration for the song came from the sleeve notes of Kleptomania by Mansun. In those sleeve notes Paul Draper, when writing about one of his songs, used the phrase. "Naivety, how I yearn for it again". This formed the entire basis of the song. Looking backwith hindsight I can see now how autobiographical it actually was as it was written towards the end of my time with Secret Eye at a time I was feeling very disillusioned with the direction the band was heading in.

lyrics

Chorus
Oh Naivety, how I yearn for you again.
There's so much to scream about but I know I must refrain.
To go back to the start is all I want to do.
And I wish I could remember how to talk to you.

Verse 1
Time goes by so fast, some one's always left behind.
There's a mirror standing against the wall but you don't seem to mind.
Noises coming from you keep twisting things around.
So I try to walk away from you without ever making a sound.

Chorus
Oh Naivety, how I yearn for you again.
There's so much to scream about but I know I must refrain.
To go back to the start is all I want to do.
And I wish I could remember how to talk to you.

Verse 2
You're saying one thing but I hear another.
You like to play the victim, like to play the spurned lover.
Everything I hear you say makes irony sound like reason.
There's a time to rise and fall but I don't know the season.

Chorus
Oh Naivety, how I yearn for you again.
There's so much to scream about but I know I must refrain.
To go back to the start is all I want to do.
And I wish I could remember how to talk to you.

Bridge
Don't tell me the future as I'm living in the past.
There's no point in saying tomorrow, tomorrow just won't last.
Told try to tell me what the future will hold.
I'm warm and safe with who I am, tomorrow's going to be cold

Chorus
Oh Naivety, how I yearn for you again.
There's so much to scream about but I know I must refrain.
To go back to the start is all I want to do.
And I wish I could remember how to talk to you.
